Buying guide · Materials
A wool and silk rug gives you the best of both: a durable wool pile for everyday life, with silk worked into the design so the pattern catches the light.
In most wool and silk rugs the field and the main body of the pile are wool, and silk is used for outlines, highlights and parts of the pattern. Because silk sits slightly differently from wool and reflects more light, those details seem to rise from the surface. Many of the transitional rugs woven in Nepal are made this way.
Living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. The wool takes the wear; the silk adds richness. It is more forgiving than an all-silk rug and more refined than an all-wool one.
Care for it as you would a wool rug, with extra caution on spills over the silk areas: blot, do not rub. Professional cleaning every two to three years.

Silk is softer than wool, so in heavy traffic the silk details can soften first. In most living rooms and bedrooms that takes many years.
