Silkrugs.

Silk is the luxury fibre of rug making. It is strong and very fine, so it can be knotted far more densely than wool, and it has a sheen that changes as you walk around it.

i.Why silk is different

A silk thread is long, smooth and very strong for its thickness. That fineness lets a weaver tie many more knots into each square inch, so a silk rug can carry detail and curves no wool rug can. The smooth fibre reflects light, which gives silk its glow: the colours look deeper from one side and brighter from the other.

ii.Where it belongs

Silk is softer and more delicate underfoot than wool, so it is happiest in rooms with lighter traffic: a bedroom, a formal sitting room, a study, or hung on a wall. In a busy hallway it will show wear sooner.

iii.Looking after it

Blot spills immediately; silk marks more easily than wool. Keep it out of strong, direct sun, use a pad underneath, and leave cleaning to professionals. Never wash a silk rug at home.

Questions

Silk, asked

In the right room, yes. Silk is strong, but it is less forgiving of heavy traffic and spills than wool, so it suits bedrooms and quieter living spaces best.

Real silk is cool to the touch, very fine and has a deep, shifting sheen. Rugs sold as "art silk" or "bamboo silk" are viscose, a different fibre. Ask us and we will show you the difference side by side.
