Buying guide · Materials

Wool & linenrugs.

A wool and linen rug pairs the spring and warmth of wool with the cool, matte texture of linen, often in a flatweave or low pile.

i.How the blend works

Wool gives the rug body and resilience, so it recovers from footsteps. Linen adds texture, a dry matte finish and softer, washed-looking colour. Woven together, often with the two fibres side by side in the pattern, they give a rug that looks relaxed but wears better than linen alone.

ii.Where it belongs

Living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, especially in calm, natural colour schemes. It is a good middle ground for anyone who loves the look of linen but needs a little more toughness.

iii.Looking after it

Vacuum regularly, blot spills, rotate the rug every so often and use a pad. Professional cleaning every two to three years.

Questions

Wool & linen, asked

For busier rooms, usually yes: the wool helps the rug recover from wear while keeping most of linen’s look.
