Linenrugs.

Linen comes from the flax plant. A linen rug is cool underfoot, matte rather than shiny, and has the relaxed, slightly rumpled character of linen cloth.

i.What linen brings

Linen fibres are long and strong, with a natural slub that gives the surface quiet texture. Colours take on a soft, washed look. Linen is most often used in flatweaves and low-pile rugs, where its texture shows best.

ii.Where it belongs

Linen suits relaxed, summery rooms: bedrooms, sitting rooms and dining rooms with gentle traffic. It is less springy than wool, so creases and footprints show more readily.

iii.Looking after it

Vacuum regularly, blot spills, rotate the rug so it wears evenly and keep a pad underneath. Leave deep cleaning to a professional.

Questions

Linen, asked

Linen fibre is strong, but it does not spring back the way wool does, so it shows wear sooner in busy spaces. It is lovely in quieter rooms.
